From required minimums to rewarding and meaningful gifts

Required minimum distributions (RMDs) may play a role in helping you support the causes you believe in while optimizing tax advantages.

Did you know you can make donations to Mustard Seed Shelter directly from your IRA? Required minimum distributions (RMDs) may play a role in helping you support the causes you believe in while optimizing tax advantages.

RMDs are mandatory withdrawals from tax-deferred retirement plans. Individuals born between 1951 and 1959 must start taking RMDs at age 73. The RMD amount is based on the account balance at the end of the prior year and other factors. When retirees find they don’t need the full RMD amount for personal expenses, they can choose to direct a portion to a charity like Mustard Seed Shelter through qualified charitable distributions, or QCDs. A QCD allows you to transfer funds directly from your retirement account to one or more public charities without that distribution being counted as taxable income.

Quick tips about QCDs
• You can begin making QCDs at age 70-1/2.
• For tax year 2026, the annual limit is $111,000 per person (spouses can each give $111,000).
• Applies to traditional, rollover, inherited, inactive simplified employee pension and inactive SIMPLE IRAs.
• Employer-sponsored plans such as active 401(k) or 403(b), 457, Keogh or ESOP are not eligible.
• Funds must transfer directly from the IRA custodian to a qualified charity.
• Donors may also use a one-time QCD to fund a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust.

QCDs can be a great way to make a rewarding and meaningful gift to Mustard Seed Shelter – helping us to continue providing life-saving services to women and children. As with any planned giving decisions, be sure to discuss the details with your financial or legal advisor to see if this gift option applies to your circumstances.
